As Business Insider's mattress guru, I always look for new and innovative sleep products, so when the Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress popped on my radar, I was incredulous. I had never seen anything like it. "It's a bed with speakers in it? Why?" I asked.

Well, the VibraSonic Mattress was designed for gamers and those who like to enjoy media in bed. The mattress comes with an adjustable bed frame, built-in subwoofers, and two external speakers for the ultimate gaming or movie experience or listening to audiobooks, music, or soothing sounds as you drift off to sleep. I tested it with the help of my 21-year-old gamer kid. Here are our experiences.

Construction

The Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress has four foam layers with subwoofers built into the head of the base layer. Beyond-Sleep

The VibraSonic Mattress is made entirely of CertiPUR-US-certified foam. The top layer is plush comfort memory foam for pressure point relief. Below that is high-density memory foam that offers support and shapes to your body's contours. Next, support foam provides comfort and stability. The base is high-density foam for durability and support. The cool-to-the-touch cover is made of polyester and olefin, which tends to be a cooler material.

I tested the queen, which has six subwoofers near the head. The twin and twin XL have three subwoofers. Two external speakers connect via cords to the head of the mattress. I liked that there was just one power plug for the entire mattress.

The VibraSonic has an adjustable bed frame with a separate remote featuring backlit buttons for easy adjustments in the dark. Both sides have two USB ports for charging devices, and the frame has several preset positions for optimal comfort. One cool feature you don't find in even the best adjustable beds is multicolor under-bed lighting, which is great for setting the vibe.

I opted out of receiving the frame — the mattress can also be sold on its own. Instead, I used it with an adjustable bed frame I already had. I found it worked well with the frame, bending with it for optimal comfort.

Setup

The Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress arrives at your home like any other bed-in-a-box. It's compressed, wrapped in plastic, and stuffed in a box the size of a minifridge. I was surprised it came compressed since I figured the speakers would need a delicate touch. Not so.

Unboxing the mattress was pretty standard. I removed the compressed mattress from the box and placed it on my adjustable bed frame. Then, I unwrapped the plastic. Beyond-Sleep includes instructions for this and the speaker set-up. Unlike most new foam mattresses, the VibraSonic had no initial odor.

Unboxing the mattress took five minutes. Setting up the external speakers took another 10 minutes. In addition to the built-in subwoofers, the bed has two external speakers. Connecting them is simple with step-by-step instructions. Basically, you're just connecting a bunch of cords and plugging in the bed.

The bed connects to your device using Bluetooth or an auxiliary cord. Despite my adversarial relationship with anything tech, it was a simple process. I liked that I didn't need to lift the bed to connect the cords, and the speakers had mounts on the back to easily hang them. I also liked the length of the speaker cords, which gives added flexibility in where you keep them. The directions recommend putting the speakers in a convenient place near the bed. I put them on shelves on each side.

The bed is controlled with a remote control, which paired easily with the mattress. The adjustable base has a separate remote.

Speaker system

I'm not a speaker expert, but poor sound quality annoys me. The VibraSonic Mattress had excellent sound quality. I was surprised by how loud it got without the audio getting muddy or crackly. I'm not a gamer, so I mainly watched media on my laptop while lying in bed. I loved how immersive the experience was. It was like being in an extra-comfortable movie theater.

The subwoofers have a massage function. I've tested plenty of adjustable bed frames that massage you, and they're always underwhelming. The VibraSonic was much more intense in a good way. It won't replace a good spa day, but the strong massaging did a great job of helping me relax.

I wanted a gamer's perspective on the mattress, so my 21-year-old kid Caesar (they/them) slept on it and put it through the gaming paces. They loved the sound quality. "I've never had better speakers or subwoofers," they said. "I would have never thought they would pair great with a good mattress, but this bed proves how great of a combo they are."

Caesar liked that you can adjust the bass to get the perfect sound for any show or game. This was important because the lowest bass setting was a little overwhelming when on certain parts of the bed. The remote was one of their favorite features because it made adjustments effortlessly and never lost connectivity.

Comfort

Caesar sleeps on their side and back and is 6-foot-4 and lightweight for their frame. They found the mattress was medium-firm, which they loved, feeling completely supported. Their sleep quality was superb.

I'd concur with Caesar's medium-firm assessment. However, as an overweight side sleeper, I found the pressure relief was lacking. I regularly woke up with body and neck soreness, and I didn't feel like I sunk in enough on my side. The bed felt stiff. The VibraSonic was more comfortable on my stomach and back. I used the Mattress Checker app (iOS and Android) to see how well my spine aligned on the bed. It deviated from perfectly aligned by five degrees with good being six degrees or lower.

I use the Garmin Forerunner 945 smartwatch to track my sleep quality when testing mattresses. My sleep scores were about average on the VibraSonic, though I noticed a trend of waking earlier than I wanted in the morning and not being able to fall back asleep.

Heat dissipation

To test how cool a mattress stays, I use an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature before lying down, right after getting up, and two minutes after. Comparing the before and after temperatures tells me how cool the mattress stays. Comparing the temperature right after getting up to two minutes later gives me its heat dissipation abilities.

The Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress got a little hotter than average, but it quickly dissipated the heat, decreasing by nearly 15 degrees in two minutes after getting up. For reference, the best cooling mattresses in our guide average a 14-degree temperature drop. Subjectively, I found the mattress was a bit hot at times, but when I got up and laid back down, it was much cooler. Caesar tends to overheat at night, yet they had no complaints about the VibraSonic.

Edge support

Good edge support makes it easier to get out of bed and more comfortable to sit on the side of the bed to put on shoes. While lying down, you have more comfortable and supportive area, a plus when your partner encroaches on your side of the bed, pushing you to the edge.

I assess edge support by sitting on a mattress and measuring how much the edge sinks. I also lie on the edge and slowly roll off, noting how far I can go before I fall. On average, the side sinks about 3 or 3.5 inches when I sit on it. The VibraSonic sank 4 inches. I also didn't roll much before I fell off the bed. Subjectively, I felt like I'd fall off when lying on the edge. This bed has poor edge support.

Motion isolation

The motion isolation was a different story. Motion isolation is important because you don't want your partner's movements to jostle you while sleeping. I measure a bed's motion-dampening properties in two ways. I drop a bowling ball from 4 feet above the mattress and measure the vibrations using a vibrometer placed on the other side of the bed. I also place a soda can upright a foot from the ball's impact point. If the can stays upright, the mattress has excellent motion dampening.

The can remained upright on the VibraSonic. The vibrometer readings were impressive as well. On average, the mattresses I've tested have a vibrometer reading of 7, with a lower number being better. The VibraSonic scored a 5.7. I've only tested one mattress with a lower score, and it was on two separate bed frames, making it an unfair comparison.

This unparalleled motion dampening makes the VibraSonic an excellent choice for people concerned about their partner's movements waking them at night.

Trial period and warranty

A long, risk-free home trial is a must when buying a mattress because the only way to know if a bed is right for you is to sleep on it in your bedroom for several nights. Beyond-Sleep's 60-night home trial is shorter than the 100+ nights most online mattress companies offer, but it should be long enough for you to tell if the VibraSonic is right for you. They also require a 30-night adjustment period before you can initiate a return.

I don't like the misleading return policy. Throughout its site, Beyond-Sleep references trying the bed "risk-free" and receiving a "full refund" if unsatisfied. However, the actual return policy states, "We will process a refund to your original payment method within 10 business days, excluding any fees for shipping, premium delivery services, state-based recycling fees, and/or promotional value." (Emphasis is mine.) So, you don't get a full refund. This is a fairly common loophole.

Beyond-Sleep backs the Vibrasonic mattress with a 10-year warranty. The warranty covers the deterioration of the mattress with a lasting and visible indentation of at least 1.5 inches and physical flaws from foam cracking or splitting. You must use a supportive foundation, and the warranty is void if you remove the cover at any point. The sound system components are only covered for two years.

Cons to consider

I don't like that the adjustable base and mattress have separate remote controls. This may be a pain to keep track of, especially in the dark. I would have liked a single remote that controls both or even an app.

The Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic has poor edge support. For most people, this won't be a big deal. However, if you share a bed, you may not feel comfortable lying on the edge. Putting your shoes on while sitting on the side may also be less comfortable.

The Vibrasonic doesn't have a very dynamic feel to it. I didn't feel like it relieved pressure on my joints. But I'm a middle-aged guy with a body full of aches and pains. More resilient individuals may not notice the stiff feel.

Lastly, Beyond-Sleep doesn't refund shipping fees if you return the mattress, so you can't try it "risk-free." Unfortunately, it isn't available to try in showrooms.

What are your alternatives?

The Leesa Sapira Hybrid is the best mattress overall in our buying guide. It offers better pressure relief and edge support than the VibraSonic Mattress. Amazon

I'm unaware of any alternatives if you're looking for a mattress with built-in speakers. I tested a bed frame with built-in speakers once, but it's no longer on the market. The VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress is one of a kind.

However, if you don't care about speakers and just want a mattress with good edge support that cradles your body, consider the top pick in our best mattress guide, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid. It has great edge support and motion isolation. I slept well on it thanks to its body-cradling foam, which felt comfortable and supportive no matter my position. It's priced comparably to the VibraSonic, but the Leesa doesn't come with an adjustable base. Read our full Leesa Sapira Hybrid Mattress review.

The bottom line

The Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress is shown in a bedroom with the external speakers on the bed.
Overall, the Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress is an excellent option for gamers and others, especially at this price point. James Brains/Business Insider

The Beyond-Sleep VibraSonic Memory Foam Mattress is unlike anything else on the market. As a non-gamer who just uses his bed to sleep, I would never buy it. However, my 21-year-old is over the moon with it. For this reason, I'd recommend it for people who want to use their bed for an immersive media experience and don't mind potentially sacrificing comfort. Plus, $1,600 for the queen is a great deal considering it comes with an adjustable base.
